REFLECTION PAPER
PRINCIPLES OF TEACHING 2
Chapter
1
Outcomes
– Based Education
CHAPTER SUMMARY
OBE or Outcomes – based
Education is concerned with planning instruction that is focused on outcomes, choosing the
methodology that leads to the intended outcomes and assessment process that
determines the attainment of intended outcomes.
Learning Principles of OBE According to Spady:
1.
Clarity of Focus
§
Teachers should focus
on helping students to develop the
knowledge and skills that will enable them to achieve the articulated intended
outcomes
2.
Designing Down
§
Teachers design
instruction (once the intended outcome is clear).
3.
High Expectations
§
Teachers should
establish high, challenging standards of performance in order to encourage
students to engage deeply in what they are learning.
4.
Expanded
Opportunities
§
Teachers must strive
to provide expanded opportunities for
all students.
The Different Level of outcomes:
·
IILOs – Institutional
Intended Learning Outcomes
·
PILOs- Program
Intended Learning
·
CILOs –Course
Intended Learning Outcomes
·
ILOs- the more
specific learning outcomes
The two types of OBE are; Translational
OBE emphasizes student mastery of traditional subject-related academic
outcomes (usually with a strong focus on subject-specific content) and some
cross-discipline outcomes (such as the ability to solve problems or to work
cooperatively). The Transformational OBE
emphasizes long-term, cross-curricular outcomes that are related directly to
students’ future life roles (such as being productive worker or a responsible
citizen or a parent).
REFLECTION
All
throughout the discussion of the Chapter One, I have learned the definition of
what is OBE. Together with its meaning, I come up with the understanding that
it was a curriculum that mainly focuses on the outcomes and is very much
relevant to the curriculum anchored to the newly implemented K to 12 Program.
Moreover, I also acquired the knowledge about the four underlying principles of
OBE, where, these four factors contribute to the wholeness of the effectivity
and efficiency of the curriculum. In addition to what I have learned, along the
discussion, I was able to be acquainted with the levels of outcomes where, OBE
should penetrate in all of the levels to be able to have an efficacy on great
learning.
Being called as “teacher in the making” or as a
student- teacher, I, myself will utilize my learning about OBE by simply,
applying its focal point which is achieving intended learning outcomes during
my discussion. By this, I will be able to practice the principle of OBE in some
fundamental practices or activities inside the learning the environment. I will
also help myself in making my discussions emphasizing the importance of
achieving the objectives or outcomes because in what I have learned, outcomes
will help me to determine if the learning is successful and effective.
Furthermore, foreseeing that soon I will be a professional teacher, I will
exploit my understanding about this chapter by means of anchoring my teaching
to the present curriculum for the reason that as what I have learned, following
the curriculum meaning you follow the trends towards the success of teaching.
Meaning to say, with the guidance of the curriculum it would help me to achieve
the same outcomes intended by the curriculum as of with my good intention to my
students’ academic success. Thus, I am able to employ the principle of
Outcomes- Based Education in the field of professional teaching and be able to
produce globally competent, highly skilled and well educated students.
